Let’s talk about Thailand – one of my favorite countries in the world! Ya know that popular country in SE Asia, shaped like an elephant nose? (which coincidentally happens to be the national animal!) It's where movies like James Bond, The Beach, and Hangover II took place and gave way to wordwide fame. It's a country synonymous with "backpackers", "expats", and "digital nomads". There are countless articles, Youtube videos, and travel blogs that sing praises of Thailand as a “must-visit tourist mecca” - and all for perfectly deserving reasons.
For those who are unfamiliar with Thailand, you might wonder… why do people flock there? What makes it so popular? Broadly speaking, my answer is this: it is a place that appeals to the masses. It’s got every characteristics that rings favorably to most of humanity - Easterners to Westerners, first-world to third-world, young and old, rich and poor, black and white, men and women! ( and anything in-between, lol). It’s where people from all sorts of backgrounds and all walks of life gather to have an enriching experience – in more ways than one!
So today, I want to share with you just that – what makes Thailand so universally appealing? Here are some of MY perspective on Thailand’s popularity – why it has a long-standing history of tourism success, and why people around the world continue to flock there.
1. Thailand boasts what I call as “three pillars of hedonism”; Beaches. Drugs. Sex Industry. It is a no-brainer that Thailand is blessed with alluring beaches and appealing warm-all-year weather. Couple that with the ubiquitous presence of legal recreational drugs and the sex industry ( another infamous attractor of Thailand), you get a recipe for international tourism magnet. I mean, who doesn’t like pristine beaches and tropical weather? Who doesn’t like to indulge in sinful and lustful endeavors? All these vices combined make Thailand the ultimate tourism mecca – especially for those seeking out hedonistic pleasures. And for this very reason, it is no surprise that Thailand is a haven for males – both young and old – because the country is loaded with stuff that appeals to dudes – plenty of cannabis, muai thai boxing, young Thai girls soliciting “services”, cheap booze, ladyboys, the rowdy bar / party scenes, etc etc... oh, did I say young Thai girls? 😏😏 Walk around the streets of Sukhumvit, Patong ( or any other Red Light District), the infamous Khaosan road, or Pattaya beach – you will see that the AVERAGE person is a western male (either young or old) shabbily dressed in shorts and sleeveless top with tattoos running up and down his arms and legs. Which leads to the next point…
2. Thailand is a country that won’t judge you. You probably heard it nicknamed as “Land of Smiles”, connoting the friendly and hospitable nature of Thai people. While this tagline might simply be an advertising slogan, it does signify one thing – Thailand is by and large, a non-confrontational, non-judgemental, tolerant society. While deeply entrenched in Buddhism, Thais understand that tourism is their identity, their economic engine. So they continue to cater to throngs of pleasure-seeking tourists pouring in while maintaining their own traditions and cultural values. Take the popular beach resort Krabi for example – it is largely a Muslim region, with lots of mosques, hijabs, halal restaurants, and daily call for prayer blasting from loudspeakers. However, you can easily go to the nearby beach romping around in a thong swimsuit wearing next-to-nothing. There is no shortage of cannabis / shroom shops, lounges, and bars where you can get your daily dose of toxins. And if you want to have some risque adult fun, no problem! There are plethora of strip clubs for those horny adult-entertainment seekers. In short, it is a country where religion and hedonism coexist. And THIS my readers, is what makes Thailand so pleasant and inviting; Thais are a tolerant, non-judgemental breed of people - so much so that you can look like a complete bum / crackhead / degenerate with a giant beer gut hanging out of your speedos, and absolutely no one will care. So come to Thailand and just be yourself!
3. Thailand is stable, safe, accessible and easy. My overall perception of Thailand and Thai people is that it is a well-contended society. Thais generally love their king (well, at least the previous one!) and their reverence for their monarchy is a proud, common sight in many public places. In fact, they are a loyal breed of people who actually like living in their country! (Gasp...what a concept!) Translation: no mass protests, no mass emigration, no political upheavals, no violent crime or any signs of instability or civil unrest (as far as I can tell). This makes Thailand a relatively safe, anxiety-free, trustworthy place to visit. In addition, it’s EASY to navigate in Thailand. One should note that tourism is deep-rooted in Thai history -since the 60s and 70s, Thais have been building an infrastructure for tourism, which only exploded in popularity over the years. And THIS is why accessibility is EASY - because the entire country is designed for tourism, it’s EASY to go from A to B, or figure out things to do and places to see. Yes, the traffic in Bangkok is crazy. After all, it is a massive concrete-jungle with gargantuan shopping malls everywhere. But the constant traffic gridlock won’t hinder you from navigating with ease – be it on the subway, ride-share, tuk-tuk, songthaew, motorcab, or taxi!
4. Thai food is highly delectable. Oh god, this is a category that warrants an entire essay; Thailand is food haven, with cuisine bursting with variety, versatility, creativity, and flavor. So versatile are their dishes, that someone completely new to Thai food can instantly start eating it on the first try. In fact, for those who are complete Asian foods newbies, I’d say Thai food is a great starting point to gradually open up your taste palettes. With plethora of mouth-watering rice dishes (pork leg on top of rice is my favorite), noodle dishes (there’s about 1000 pad thai / pad se ew variations), soups ( the famous tom yong stew anyone?), seafood and meat varieties bursting with flavors and herbs, it is no wonder Thai food is a world-renowned cuisine, and people from all over the world travel great distances to devour them! (oh, and don’t forget to top off your meal with sticky rice with mango or Thai pudding with coconut milk – that stuff is highly addictive!!)
5. Thailand is the perfect travel hub of SE Asia – look at the geography of Thailand; it borders Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Malaysia. Perfectly situated in the heart of SE Asia, Thailand is a part of the loosely defined route that is “Banana Pancake Trail” a popular land-based route for backpackers that covers major destinations in Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. This route describes the backpacking superhighway and the network of guesthouses, hostels, and restaurants that serve fried banana pancakes to the throngs of foreigners exploring the heavily backpacked parts of these countries (Yum!). In addition, Thailand’s border to neighboring countries makes it easy to do a land-based visa-run for tourists who need to exit-and-reenter to prolong their stay. All of this can be done by bus or train- no expensive airfare needed!
6. …and did I tell you it’s CHEAP there? Of course, what’s a better way to top off the warm weather, stunning beaches, exotic islands, rich temples and artifacts, mouthwatering food, good public transit, easy access to sex, drugs, and booze… than an affordable price point? I’d say Thailand’s overall affordability is a MAJOR, if not THE biggest selling card. Food is cheap and yummy. Hotels are cheap and spacious. Luxury services and public amenities such as massages, tattoos, hair / nail salons, spas, gyms, nightclubs, movie theaters, and even doctor’s visits – are one-third price of anything you find in any first-world country!! Of course, there are people who say “But Thailand isn’t cheap anymore! It’s gone up considerably since Covid! (and even before that)” To that, I’d say it’s still pretty damn cheap, compared to the hike felt rest of the world. Why? Because Thailand successfully managed to hedge against global inflation with their constant influx of tourism dollars and foreign investment throughout the years. Now I’m no expert in Thai economics, but if they’re able to contain their prices at a reasonable level for so long ( that 60 baht Pad Thai dish that I had in 2011? It’s still 60 baht in 2025!), they must be doing something right!
7. Lastly, Thailand is popular because… simply put, everyone is already going there (DUH!). Sounds silly, but if everyone’s flocking to a place, there must be something to it, right? Hear me out when I say this – Thailand is the only place in the world where you will see all 190 nationalities. People from all continents travel great distances to enjoy the warm weather, beaches, and cheap prices, which makes Thailand a truly global amalgam of humanity. In fact, it’s the only country where I met a Liberian (from Liberia), Macedonian (from Macedonia) and a Tajik! (from Tajikistan). And THIS, my readers, is a testament to Thailand’s massive tourism success. People flock there, because there is something for everyone – from stunning natural scenery to enriching Buddhist temples to bustling night markets to not-so-discreet sex industry. With so many facets that a country can offer – both old and new, ancient and modern, rich and poor, urban and rural, it is no wonder that Thailand is bursting with allure and uniqueness that appeals to the mass hodgepodge of humanity worldwide!
