No, You Don't Look Young For Your Age

To the millions ( if not billions) of people who claim "Oh, I look so young for my age!!", guess what... no you don't.

It's another self-serving cognitive bias we've all heard a gazillion times over; people believing they look much younger than their actual age, and somehow that entitles them to date much younger than their age 🙄 . Do you ever notice a funny thing happens in any online forums when the topic of age comes up – everyone chimes in about how they, alone among all of their acquaintances, are always mistaken for so much younger? Well, sorry to burst your bubble, but if you're one of them, you ain't as unique as you think! In fact, you are among the whopping 70 percent of Americans who are floating the “De Nial” river when it comes to your apparent age (according to a 2021 survey by Pew Research).

The paradox that comes with this confirmation bias is that when 70 percent of all people who are, say, 40 claim to appear as 30, then that becomes the “norm” for what an average 40 looks like. So the 70 percent of you, ( as well as the more realistic 30 percent) probably do look exactly as old as you are. After all, we can’t ALL look younger than average, can we? Just as we can’t ALL be smarter-than-average, hotter-than-average, better-drivers-than-average, holier-than-average, etc. That said, here are the reasons why “I look young for my age” is nothing more than a delusional, ego-stroking kool-aid for the soul.

1. Age recognition is subjective as fuck.

According to my estimation, this man can be anywhere between 33 and 37. He can say any number between these, and I will believe he is that old. Now that’s just according to MY eyes; someone else can guess the age parameter as higher or lower. The point is, age recognition can shift or vary depending on the individual’s perspective. So the fact that one thinks “I look young for my age” is entirely a moot point.

2. Just because you think you look ____ years old it doesn’t mean others agree.

If you are a 40 year old who “swears” don’t look a day older than 32, wanna know who’s the best judge? Surprise surprise – an actual 32 year old! If no 32-year old agrees that you look 32, then guess what, your own age recognition is waaaay off. I mean, how embarrassing would it be to realize that no one agrees with your apparent false read? (same goes with attractiveness, smartness, maturity, and any other subjective measures) So whether or not you look a day over ___ in your mind, it’s best to keep this opinion to yourself!

3. Appearing younger doesn’t mean that you qualify for a younger partner.

“But but… I look much younger than my age!” is an often-heard proclamation to justify snagging a younger partner / date. For one thing, this kind of attitude is not only laughable, but also borderlines desperation; most likely, the younger person you’re vying for can see right through your attempt to masquerade as something you are not! Did it ever occur to your mind that you simply don’t appeal to that younger chick / guy?

4. Looking young does not equate looking attractive.

Pretty self-explanatory here; looking young doesn’t mean looking good. Heck, one can look young and be completely dog-ugly. So to the 45 year old man vying for a 35 year old woman due to his ‘perceived’ youthful looks – if you’re pursuing a younger woman based on her looks, why should she choose you based on yours? Especially when you’re completely average-to-ugly??

5. Hear me when I say this…your age WILL catch up to you!

Lean in for a surprise… you won’t look “young for your age” forever! Plenty of people claim ‘youthful appearance’ until a certain age, and suddenly…BAM! Comes the wrinkles, the grey hair, the crow’s feet, and all the signs of aging overnight! Thought you were immune? Think again… you’ll get hit real sudden, real fast - and in no time, you’ll end up looking like your peers!

My final message – quit telling yourselves “I look young for my age”. 99 percent of you look exactly your age. If you’ve been told all your lives “you look so young!” (again, very cliché) then most likely, you were simply paid a compliment, and you let it get to your head. So quit flattering yourselves and admit that you look exactly how old you are.

Bottom line: you don’t look young for your age… much less deserve a partner younger than your age! 🤣🤣🤣
